    Beginner Tennis Lessons in Indianapolis

    $80/hr private

The single biggest problem with most beginner tennis is that new players spend the first month missing. That kills motivation and locks in bad swings that take months to unlearn later. A better approach: shrink the court, feed short, and build technique on contact you can already make. Every step gets slightly harder only after the previous step is stable.

Beginner lessons in Indianapolis are open to adults and juniors from age five up, and there is no fitness or athletic background required. Most adult beginners are comfortably rallying by lesson four and playing real practice points by lesson eight. The learning curve is a lot friendlier than tennis has a reputation for — the trick is a coach who feeds properly, corrects one thing at a time, and does not skip the fundamentals.

    Your first lesson

Twenty minutes of grip, ready position, and split-step basics; twenty of forehand contact from mini-court; and twenty of a real cooperative rally at gradually increasing distance. You will leave having actually played tennis, not having spent an hour learning to hold the racket. Most first-time students are surprised at how much they get done in a single hour.

    What you need to bring

A racket if you have one — loaners are available for the first few lessons if you want to try before buying. Non-marking court shoes (regular running shoes are usually fine to start), water, and a hat if we are outdoors. That is it. Bruce can advise on racket selection once you have a few lessons in and know what feels comfortable.

    The three-month path

A typical adult beginner is comfortably rallying full-court by lesson six, serving a real second serve by lesson ten, and playing practice sets by month three. This is with one private lesson per week and one self-practice session. Faster progression is possible with more frequent lessons; slower is fine too — the milestones matter more than the timeline.

    Group vs. private for beginners

The most successful path for adult beginners is 2-3 private lessons to build fundamentals, then a mix of one private per week plus a group clinic. Private alone works but is expensive; group alone from day one works but the ramp is slower because a coach has to split attention. The blend gives you the best of both.

    What "beginner" really means

Beginner covers everyone from a first-time adult who has never held a racket to a returning player who last played in high school 20 years ago. The lesson plan adjusts. If you can already keep a rally going but want to build real strokes, you are probably better served by adult intermediate lessons — a first session will sort out where you actually fit.
