Tennis Lessons in Indianapolis
From $80/hr
Whether you are picking up a racket for the first time or preparing for a USTA sectional, Indianapolis-based coach Bruce Hartrich builds a lesson plan around the way you actually play — not a generic curriculum handed out to every student. Every lesson starts with a short assessment of what is working, what is breaking down, and what the next 30 days should look like. From there, sessions are engineered to make the specific improvement you asked for stick under real match pressure.
Bruce has coached in Indianapolis for over three decades, working with players from complete first-timers through USTA sectional finalists and Division I college recruits. The teaching philosophy is simple: the fastest path from where you are to where you want to play is a coach who watches carefully, corrects precisely, and never wastes an hour on drills that do not transfer.
What lessons cover
Every private lesson pairs stroke mechanics with live-ball rally patterns so improvements transfer to real match play instead of dying at the drill line. Adults typically start with a stroke audit — one hour of feeding, rallying, and short point play that reveals exactly what to fix first. Juniors move through age-appropriate technical progressions built around the red-orange-green ball pathway. Every student, regardless of level, leaves a lesson with one thing to focus on until next time.
Who takes lessons
Beginner adults new to the game, weekend players trying to break through a plateau, USTA league players prepping for a season, and junior players at every USTA level from 10U through high-school varsity. Bruce also coaches doubles partners, spouses, and small friend groups in semi-private and group formats. If you can hold a racket and want to get better, there is a lesson format that fits.
Where lessons happen
Outdoor lessons run at Southport High School and Perry Meridian High School courts on the south side of Indianapolis. Both facilities offer well-maintained hard courts with fencing, shade, and easy parking. In winter, lessons move to partner indoor facilities — indoor slots are limited, so returning students get first choice and new students are added from a short waitlist.
Formats and pricing
Private one-on-one lessons are $80/hour, with 90-minute deep-work sessions available. Semi-private (two players sharing one court) runs $50 per player. Adult small-group clinics are $26 per session and junior group clinics $30 per session, both capped at six players and grouped by skill level. Packages of 5 and 10 private lessons include a discount and priority booking for premium time slots.
What makes these lessons different
Two things: video and follow-through. Every private student gets short slow-motion clips of the strokes we work on, so you see the change instead of guessing at it. And between lessons you leave with a specific, small assignment — one drill, one thought, one pattern to look for — so improvement happens between sessions, not just during them.
