    Tennis Mental Toughness Training

Every player who has ever lost a match they should have won knows the problem is not their forehand. It is what happens between points. That is trainable. The mental side of tennis is not a mysterious talent that some players have and others do not — it is a set of specific, coachable routines that you practice until they hold up under pressure.

Bruce is the author of Using the Law of Attraction in Tennis, a full-length book on the mental side of match play built from three decades of coaching. Mental toughness lessons are on-court, in real match conditions — not a Zoom call about mindset in the abstract. You practice the routines in the same conditions you will use them.

    Pre-point routines

A repeatable 10-15 second routine that calms your nervous system before every serve and return. Simple in concept — bounce, breath, target, go — but it is the difference between a shaky 5-6 and a steady 6-5. Once installed, the routine runs on autopilot even at 30-40 in a third set.

    Between-point recovery

What you do with the 20 seconds between points matters more than most players realize. We build a physical and mental recovery routine you can rely on: how you walk, where you look, how you breathe, and what you tell yourself when the last point went badly.

    Handling scoreboard pressure

The specific mental frameworks for serving at 30-40, breaking at 5-4, and closing a set out. These are the moments where matches are decided, and they have their own specific mental patterns that can be practiced ahead of time so they feel familiar when they matter.

    Loss recovery and self-talk

What you say to yourself after a bad missed shot or a bad game changes what happens in the next one. Sessions include specific self-talk scripts calibrated to the situations you have historically struggled with — a form of cognitive rehearsal that transfers directly to match performance.

    Integration with technical coaching

Mental toughness work is not a separate track — it is layered into technical lessons for players who need it. Most students working on the mental side also have a specific stroke or match situation they are drilling; the two integrate naturally in a single lesson.
