    Tennis Tournament Preparation in Indianapolis

Tournaments punish players who show up hoping their practice tennis will show up too. Real tournament prep engineers that transfer. The goal is not to be a better player by tournament day — you are already the player you are. The goal is to make sure the player you already are actually shows up.

Bruce has prepared juniors and adults for USTA Midwest Section tournaments, sectional playoffs, and local Indianapolis events. The program compresses into whatever timeline the player has: a three-week build for a scheduled event, or a two-lesson tune-up for a tournament next week. Both work, just at different scales.

    Three weeks out

Physical peaking begins — sessions get shorter and more match-specific. We drop long baseline drills and add point-play blocks that match tournament intensity. Serves are practiced from actual match starting position, not warmup rhythm. The goal for these three weeks is to arrive at tournament day sharp, not exhausted.

    One week out

Match scripts for the likely opponents (if known), a serve and return warmup routine, and a "if it starts going bad" plan you have already rehearsed. This week is about certainty — you should know exactly what your first three service games will look like and what your recovery plan is if you drop the first set.

    Tournament day

A pre-match warmup routine you have practiced enough that it works even when you are nervous. That includes physical warmup timing, first-serve rehearsal, return of serve reps, and a specific mental routine for the walk to the court. Most players over-warm-up on tournament day; the routine is calibrated to send you to the court energized, not tired.

    Between-round coaching

For local Indianapolis tournaments, Bruce is often on-site between rounds when scheduling allows. Between-round coaching covers what to fix, what to keep, and what to eat before the next match. For travel tournaments, coaching is delivered by phone or video review.

    Post-tournament review

The best tournament lesson is the one after the tournament, not before. A single session reviewing what happened, what worked, and what to build on for the next event is the highest-leverage debrief in tournament coaching.
